WASHINGTON (Armenpress)–According to a report from the Azerbaijani newspaper "Zerkalo," a leader of Iranian-Azeris Mahmoudali Cheraghanli recently attracted the attention of US government officials and the American media during a recent visit to the United States.
During his stay in Washington–Cheraghanli met with a number of Congressional and other government representatives and was interviewed by "Newsweek" and the "Washington Post" regarding the conditions of the Azeris of and their independence movement.
Among the issues analyzed were the violation of the rights of Azeris within Iran–the need to democratize Iran and the Karabakh conflict.
According to Cheraghanli–a United States representative promised to provide moral support to the Azeris. The Azeri leader understood this to be a sign of support of the Azeris struggle for rights within Iran.
Cheraghanli noted that more than fifty percent of the population of Iran is Azeri in origin and that despite this fact–the Azeris are profoundly disappointed in Khatami’s government. He also noted that only a small fraction of the population does not wish for the reinstatement of the Shah’s regime.
