Iran’s President Calls for Closer Relations with Armenia

TEHRAN (RFE/RL)—Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian had a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday.
The President hailed the strong and stable relations between Armenia and Iran and attached importance to furthering reinforcement and deepening of relations. He added that the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program has opened broad perspectives for the development of bilateral trade and economic ties and stressed the need for practical steps towards that end.
Rouhani and Nalbandian referred to the process of implementation of the agreements reached between the leaders of the two countries and the joint economic projects.
The parties agreed that the lifting of the visa regime between the two countries would serve an additional impetus for the intensification of ties between the business circles and boost tourism.
Nalbandian briefed Rouhani on the steps targeted at the elimination of consequences of the military actions unleashed by Azerbaijan against Artsakh, the efforts towards implementation of the agreements reached in Vienna.
Rouhani stressed Iran’s willingness to contribute to stability and peace in the region, and reiterated his country’s support for the exceptionally peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict on the basis of the principles of international law.
The Armenian Prime Minister hailed Iran’s balanced position on the Karabakh issue.
Iran’s President asked to convey his warm greetings to the President of Armenia and revealed his plans to visit Armenia in the near future.
Nalbandian had a meeting with Iran’s Vice-President, and Head of the Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi.
They discussed issues related to the development of bilateral relations and exchanged views on urgent international issues.
Salehi briefed Nalbandian on the implementation of the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.
The same day, Nalbandian had a meeting with Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran.
They discussed the steps towards deepening the cooperation and the process of implementation of the agreements reached on the highest level.
The Armenian Foreign Minister briefed Shamkhani on the efforts towards elimination of consequences of the large scale-military actions Azerbaijan unleashed against Nagorno-Karabakh in April. They agreed that there is no alternative to the peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict.
During the meeting reference was made to urgent international and regional issues and the efforts towards their settlement.
