AKHALKALAK, Georgia (A-Info)–During a regular session of the Union of Javakhk Intellectuals Thursday, the organization decided to appeal to Georgian authorities to consider the Armenian population in southern Georgia during the construction of the Kars-Akhalkalak-Baku railway, a project opposed by the US and the EU and bypassing Armenia. The A-INFO news agency reported that during the meeting, with more than 100 participants, the issue of making the Armenian language in Samtskhe-Javakhk and Tsalka the official language with Georgian was discussed. The participants also referred to the issue on possible threats to Javakhk in case of the construction of Kars-Akhalkalak-Tbilisi-Baku railway. The intellectuals decided to apply to the newly elected county assembly expecting to solve the issue connected with the language. As to the construction of the railway, the participants made a decision to apply to the Georgian central authorities asking them to take into consideration the peculiarities of Javakhk, political, economic as well as environmental, before starting the construction of the railway.
