STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan)–Recently–the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan sent a note of protest to the authorities of Switzerland in connection with the activities of a number of foreign companies in the territory of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic.
In her commentaries given to a number of news agencies Karabakh Foreign Minister Naira Melkoumian described the note of protest filed by Azerbaijan as totally absurd. She is baffled that official Baku is continuing its endeavors to check Nagorno Karabakh’s economic growth now that the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan are making efforts to establish an atmosphere of confidence in the region and create conditions for an ultimate settlement of the Karabakh conflict. In particular–Baku is trying to oppose the activities of the Swiss Frank Muller and Andre Group companies–which are going to set up the production of watches–jewelry and engage in banking activities in Karabakh. In this regard–the minister said that currently international mediators consider it as the imperative of the time that post-war rehabilitation be launched in the conflict zone and that the entities of the region integrate economically. According to Melkoumian–despite the Azeri calls for peace and stability–the note of Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry–which is ajar from today’s realities–is another demonstration of Baku’s lacking a sincere desire to achieve an early settlement of the conflict.
Speaking of the activities of foreign companies on Karabakh soil–Melkoumian called it unreasonable and groundless to accuse such companies of violating international norms. She stressed that these are privately owned companies and their operation in Nagorno Karabakh does not run counter to the norms of international law.
