STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan)–Well-know Karabakh leader Henrik Andreyi Poghossian died recently in Moscow. He was 69.
Born in 1931 in Stepanakert–Poghossian graduated from the Russian high school in 1949. He earned a degree from the Moscow Agricultural Engineering Institute in 1959. He returned to Nagorno-Karabakh where he worked in several positions within his field of specialty.
During his tenure–he held important positions with in the economic and agricultural infrastructure of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast.
From 1989 to 1993–Poghossian was a member of the Karabakh parliament.
With the onset of the Karabakh movement in 1988–Poghossian–as the chairman of the Communist party at the time–spared no effort to address the Karabakh issue within Soviet circles.
An announcement issued by the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic president–prime minister–parliament speaker–members of parliament and government officials–categorized Poghossian as a torchbearer for the Karabakh liberation movement and an integral part of the establishment of the independent Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
