YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A delegation led by Nagorno Karabakh Republic President Arkady Ghoukassian arrived in Detroit–Michigan–on November 21. The first meeting with representatives of the local Armenian community was held at the Charles and Emma Soghoyans mansion where a luncheon was held in honor of the Karabakh president.
Thereafter the Karabakh president held a meeting with the local Armenian public at one of the Armenian churches in Detroit.
Then Ghoukassian spoke at the Armenian Center of Detroit where approximately 400 representatives of the local Armenian community gathered to listen and periodically cheer on the president. Ghoukassian called for the restoration of the war-torn economy of Nagorno Karabakh–construction of roads–and creating new jobs to turn Karabakh into a comprehensively strong republic.
The gathering was followed by a reception honoring the Karabakh president arranged on behalf of the ARF Office of Michigan.
On Monday morning–November 22–the Ghoukassian-led delegation arrived in Los Angeles.
Ghoukassian addressed a meeting of representatives of the local Armenian community at Red Lion Hotel in Glendale. His speech was preceded by a press conference for representatives of the Armenian mass media. The press conference focused on the Armenia Fund Telethon 99–the Karabakh settlement–the recent OSCE Istanbul Summit–the internal political situation in Karabakh–and foreign investmen’s in Karbakh’s economy. The journalists said that after the tragic events of October 27 it was very difficult to expect a successful telethon–but the visit of the Karabakh President to the United States gave them hopes that the mission would be successfully accomplished. Ghoukassian said he attached exceptional importance to this telethon–which was the manifestation of the unity of Armenia–Artsakh and the Diaspora rather than an ordinary fund-raising event. And that is why Ghoukassian decided to pay a visit to the US to take part in the telethon despite the complicated situation in Armenia and Karabakh.
