STEPANAKERT—The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Artsakh, is ready for direct talks with Azerbaijan, on all levels, as a side to the conflict, Karabakh President Bako Sahakian said in an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Artsakh’s independence.
Stressing that with Karabakh the conflict cannot be resolved, a fact, Sahakian said, was echoed by international mediators—the co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group.
“Stepanakert is ready to engage in direct talks with Baku over any issue. I believe, the comprehensive resumption of the conflict negotiations is only a matter of time and the sooner that happens the less time would be necessary for the final resolution of the conflict,” said Sahakian.
The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic president also said that there did not exist any legal basis for the international community not to recognize Karabakh’s independence.
“It is an entirely different issue that there are geopolitical considerations and other interests that delay that recognition,” emphasized Sahakian, explaining that during the last three to four years, the recognition of other unrecognized states has entered a substantive new phase.
Sahakian explained that Stepanakert is not awaiting precedents and will actively pursue international recognition, regardless of whether other unrecognized states attain it or not.
“There are unequivocal basis” for recognition, said Sahakian “whether it is historical, political or moral.”

ARTSAKH IS ARMENIA. THAT’S IT.
Italian government may not recognize the indipendence of NKR (unlike did for Kosovo) not to disappoint Nato allies (USA and Turkey), but Italian people is undoubtly on the side of NKR.
Artsakh province of Armenia, nearby Zangezur. Long life to the Armenians of the mountains, and friendly greetings from Italy!
We Armenians should recognize that when we talk about negotiating with Azeri’s or about the resumption of violence initiated by Azeri’s, we are not dealing with Azeri’s. It is actually Turkey that we are dealing with. The success in NKR has made the Turks worried that if the opportunity arises, we will get back Nakhijevan, Ararat Mountains, Kars, Ardahan, Igdir, and many other ancestral pieces of land.
If Artsakh is Armenia, then Glendale, Fresno and Watertown is Armenia.
Fred-oglu, Artsakh is historic Armenia, same as Armenian Highlands is historic Armenia, where Turks are currently in Unlawful Detainer. Armenians were living in Artsakh and Armenian Highlands for about 4,000 years when nomadic Tatar-Turk tribes started invading from the Altai Mountains regions and Mongolian Steppes about 1,000 years ago, exterminating the indigenous populations and stealing their property.
Glendale, Fresno, Watertown are cities in these United States of America.
Armenian-Americans living in those and many other cities of these United States of America came to this country during the past 100 years, as legal immigrants or legal refugees. Armenians are quite aware who was living in these lands centuries ago. And we are quite aware that Native Americans are not Armenians. Neither were the Founding Fathers of these United States.
Nice try: No cigar.
(NOTE: ‘Unlawful Detainer’ – The act of retaining possession of property without legal right.)
For heavens sake Artsakh has been Armenian soil for thousands of years until Stalin gave it away a mere 90 years ago; we were forced to fight for her for the safety for our wonderful people and we won the war. That is it. Artsakh is an independent state, as it belonged to Armenians from time immemorial, it shall belong to us until the end of times. You are a good many Mr. Bako Sahakian and Armenians all around the world along with Artsakhtsis love you for what you stand for! Keep up the good work!!!!!
I got news for Sahakian. Azerbaijan is NOT and will NEVER be ready for any kind of talks with bunch of people hiding in mountain caves.
