STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan/Armenpress)–The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic started preparations to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the national-liberation struggle of Karabakh. On Dec. 30–the President of Nagorno-Karabakh issued a state decree–establishing a government commission to be chaired by Prime Minister Leonard Petrossian to organize celebrations.
The committee is comprised of members of the Nagorno-Karabakh parliament and administration–heads of ministries–as well as writer and publicist Zori Balayan.
At a January 5 session of the commission–Petrossian stressed that February 1988 marked the beginning of an awakening of the national consciousness of the Armenian nation. He asked all members of the commission to submit their proposals regarding a series of events to be held in the capital and other regional centers on February 20.
On February 20–1988–the Council of the People’s Deputies of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast held a session at which it decided to submit petitions to the Supreme Councils of the Soviet Republics of Armenian and Azerbaijan–requesting the attachment of NKAO to Armenian.
