NEW YORK–His Holiness Karekin II–Catholicos of All Armenia’s will spend 10 days in New York City to participate as an honorary guest in the Millennium World Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders–held at the United Nations from August 28 to 31.
His Holiness arrived in New York’s JFK International Airport Sunday–and was met by His Eminence Archbishop Khajag Barsamian–Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America–His Excellency Ambassador Movses Abelian–Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia to the United Nations–and other Armenian dignitaries.
During the Millennium Summit–His Holiness Karekin II will be one of a select group of the world’s most distinguished religious leaders–representing all of the world’s major faith traditions. More than 1000 religious leaders will gather at the General Assembly to discuss how to harness the power of religious tolerance and spiritual faith to educate and mobilize their communities–and to focus on reducing divisions and ancient antipathies. They hope to demonstrate their united commitment and determination to work together to eliminate the causes that perpetrate violence.
His Holiness Karekin II is accompanied by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Navassard Kjoyan–Vicar of the Araratian Pontifical Diocese–and the Very Rev. Fr. Arshak Khachatryan from the Holy See of Etchmiadzin–staff bearer to His Holiness. His Eminence Archbishop Khajag Barsamian–His Eminence Archbishop Zaven Chinchinyan–the Primate of Egypt–and His Eminence Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian–the Primate of the Western Diocese of America–are among the dignitaries invited to attend the summit.
While in New York–His Holiness will visit the Diocesan Center to meet with Archbishop Barsamian and other Armenian clergy. Catholicos Karekin II will return to Holy Etchmiadzin on August 31.
