YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)– "We view the verdicts handed down recently in connection with the September 25 case as a slap on the wrist," vice-president of the Constitutional Rights Union Haik Baboukhanian told a news conference Wednesday.
Representative of the Yerevan Office of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation–Kim Balayan–said that mild punishment may be viewed as the softening of policy pursued by the Armenian leadership.
Attorney Aghassi Arshakian said that "On September 25–the disturbances were committed by persons supervised by former Interior Minister Vano Siradeghian."
According to Balayan–his trial was a major breach of the law–which–unfortunately–continued during the trial. "Even if the orders had been given by Levon Ter-Petrosyan–one should admit that those orders were given in such a way as to discredit Ter-Petrosyan rather than the opposition," Balayan stressed.
According to Balayan–the present situation can be explained by the fact that the people giving the orders were conscientious persons deliberately making mistakes because they understood that all charges had been concocted or they were simply inexperienced.
"The leadership probably realized that it could no longer rule–but it took advantage of the opposition’s inability to seize power," Balayan said.
Balayan said that unless the leadership realizes that it cannot seize power through violence–the people are in great danger.
