PARIS (Reuters)–The presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan said on Friday that they had intensified efforts to resolve their 13-year long conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region at a Paris meeting with French President Jacques Chirac.
Armenian President Robert Kocharian told reporters at a joint news conference with his Azeri counterpart that the latest of a series of meetings held under a peace process presided over by France–Russia and the United States had aided progress.
“I think that the Paris meeting has provided an impulse in the search for a solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” Kocharian said.
“It’s the first time that we have approached the problem in such a wide and deep way,” he said.
Azeri President Haydar Aliyev said: “At each meeting–we notice that our mutual understanding increases–and that’s already a great success.”
