YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenian President Robert Kocharian visited Yerevan State University Wednesday on the occasion of its 80th anniversary. The president held a two-hour private meeting at the director’s office and attended a reception held at the assembly hall of the University.
Addressing several most important aspects of the university’s 80-year history–the president pointed out the need for entrusting the university with broader powers and stressed that it finally won international recognition.
He cited the presence of academicians from number of countries to mark the anniversary as testament to the institution’s international stature. Thereafter–the president bestowed government awards to the director of the University and the leading lecturers.
The president decorated Rector of Yerevan State University–Academician Radik Martirossian with the "St. Mesrop Mashtots" Order–and various other awards and medals to faculty and staff at the university.
In conclusion–Martirossian awarded the Golden Medal of Yerevan State University to the president.
