NICOSIA–March 20 (Reuter) – A Kurdish rebel group on Thursday said it would target businesses and tourist sites in Turkey as part of the rebel fight for self-rule in southeast Turkey.
"If Turkey insists on violence from the spring of 1997 businesses–roads–bridges–tourism and the fascist circles–which are many–will become targets," Adar Serket–a representative of the political wing of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK)–said at a news conference in Nicosia.
More than 21,000 people have been killed in the 12-year conflict between Turkish troops and the PKK–which wants autonomy or independence in Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast.
The PKK has threatened over the past few years to attack tourist sites and in 1994 three foreigners died in bomb blasts in Istanbul and Turkish coastal resorts.
