YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Professor Levon Marashlian–Professor of History at Glendale College–and visiting professor at UCLA and CSUN–said that 25 years of consistent efforts to get international affirmation of the Armenian Genocide proved effective and it is necessary to continue activities in this direction until the final restoration of the truth.
Professor Levon Marashlian–who has a doctorate in historical sciences–pointed out that new achievemen’s have been registered as a result of 25 years of consistent efforts towards international recognition of the Armenian Genocide and every year pressure from the US Congress on the president demanding recognition of the Genocide is growing stronger making it more probable that the Genocide will be recognized by the United States. This very circumstance made President Clinton intervene drastically on the eve of April 24–2000 to stop the passage of a Genocide Resolution–because it was evident that there was a majority in the Senate supporting the adoption of the Resolution.
"The recognition of the Genocide by the great powers will eventually make Turkey admit its fault and compensate for the crime committed," the historian said–pointing out the significance of the recognition of the Genocide by Germany–Great Britain–Italy and then by Israel.
Marashlian lauded President Robert Kocharian’s persistence for recognition by constantly presenting this issue to the UN tribune and other international organizations. Professor Marashlian emphasized that one should act with greater vigor–pooling efforts of Armenian ambassadors and the Armenian lobby in the large states and at the UN in this direction.
The professor noted that US congressmen–who are raising their voice in support of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide louder every year–hailed the establishment of the Turkish-Armenian Reconciliation Commission–which may further hinder the efficiency of efforts in this matter. The historian finds that the Armenian people should be vigilant and united in their attitude opposing the commission.
