YERKIR (Noyan Tapan–Yerkir)–Public and government ceremonies took place in Armenia on May 28 to mark the 85th anniversary celebration of Armenian Independence Day–the establishment of the First Independent Republic of Armenia. Officials–including President Robert Kocharian–chairman of the National Assembly Armen Khachatrian–representatives of government and political parties–parliament deputies–as well as dignitaries gathered at the Sardarabad Memorial to commemorate–along with thousands of people–the historic advancement of national spirit–liberation–and freedom.
Members of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Bureau and ARF Armenia Supreme Body–ARF ministers and parliament members as well as a large group of ARF members also visited the Sardarabad memorial on Wednesday to mark the anniversary of the First Armenian Republic and the heroic battle of Sardarabad. They were joined by representatives of the ARF Armavir chapter.
On behalf of the ARF–Bureau representative Hrant Markarian and Supreme Body representative Armen Rustamian laid a wreath on the Sardarabad memorial in memory of the heroes of the battle. After the official ceremony–ARF representatives attended reception organized by the Armavir ARF chapter.
"Our nation should know about the great contribution the ARF made in gaining independence," Sos Sargsian said addressing the gathering.
