MOSCOW (News.az)—Russia welcomes the normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey, which it deems “expedient” and “fair” in the current environment, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was quoted by News.az as saying on Wednesday.
“On the whole, we welcome normalization of ties between Armenia and Turkey and the establishment of diplomatic relations would be quite reasonable and fair in the current situation,” Medvedev said, responding to questions on the issue posed by reporters attending a forum on European and Asian media in Moscow on Wednesday.
Medvedev was quick to note that the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations wasn’t a political move targeted at any single country, but rather “done for the sake of Armenia, Turkey and all adjacent states.”
“If this message is created and sent in a correct manner, there will be no tensions in other countries that are closely watching these processes”, Medvedev said, referring to simmering concerns in Azerbaijan that open borders between Armenia and Turkey will decrease its leverage over Armenia in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement process.
Medvedev said Armenia and Turkey are trying to overcome problems they had in the 20th century and doing so by “showing restraint and searching for compromises.”
