SOFIA, Bulgaria (Combined Sources)–Mermaid, a romantic contemporary fairy tale by Russian-Armenian director Anna Melikian, won the best film award at the 12th annual Sofia International Film Festival of the international Sofia Film Festival.
The award ceremony took place Saturday at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia.
Mermaid defended in its reputation of a surefire festival selection. The Best Film Award at Sofia Film Fest follows Melikian’s World Cinema Directing Award win at the Sundance Film Festival.
Mermaid is a follow-up to the filmmaker’s acclaimed debut "Mars."
The film revolves around Alisa (Anastasiya Dontsova) following her birth six years earlier to a stocky single woman (Maria Sokova) after a seashore skinny-dipping encounter with a wayward sailor.
The young girl grows up independent and headstrong, to the extent that when her mother refuses to let her study ballet, Alisa takes a vow of silence and keeps it for more than a decade, as she discovers her unusual ability to make wishes come true.
