YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–An assassination attempt on the lives of two company presidents was foiled by Armenia’s National Security Ministry–the ministry’s information office reported Friday.
The report said an attempt on the lives of the leaders of the "Slavgroup" and "Terutiun" companies was prevented as a result of intelligence operations carried out by the ministry.
In a press release the ministry said that co-chairman of the Council of the Veterans of the "Special Regiment" Lieutenant-Colonel Gevorg Ter-Gevorgian–Assistant Commander of the Battalion of the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Interior Ministry of Armenia Major Martik Budaghian–employee of the operative and search department of the Ministry of State Revenues Stepan Nikoghossian and others were arrested.
Aravot newspaper reported that Ter-Gevorgian has served as a bodyguard to the former Armenian leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan–while Nikoghosian served on the executive body of the Yerkrapah organization.
On October 5–as a result of joint activities of the Ministry of National Security of Armenia and the Federal Security Service of Russia another member of the same group–former head of the Operative Department of the Tax Inspection of Yerevan’s Erebuni community Koryun Melikjanian was arrested.
It is reported that as a result of the search and subsequent arrests a remote-control bomb–two AKM submachine guns–two Makarov and one Beretta pistols and nearly 700 rounds of ammunition were confiscated.
A criminal case was initiated in connection with the assassination attempts.
