Special to Asbarez By Jenny Kiljian New Age Armenia–through the collaboration of Artur Sedrakian and Albina Hambartsumian–is a dynamic masterpiece that brings forth traditional Armenian music in a previously unheard fusion with contemporary rhythms and concepts.
The essence of traditional instrumen’s–such as Shvi and Duduk–has been superimposed upon modern pop and dance tempos–breathing new life into well-known Armenian folk songs–such as Ambi Dagitz–Gakavik–and Na Mi Naz Ooni.
While provoking a renewed interest within the older generation of Armenia’s–this innovative and unique approach will make traditional music more accessible to the younger generation of Armenia’s who might otherwise remain unaware of their rich cultural heritage.
Sedrakian and Hambartsumian–both graduates of the Yerevan Conservatory of Music–were always inclined to produce such a ground-breaking project. Although their previous undertakings had been successful–the two aspired to create an album of much higher caliber–which would have the potential for international acclaim.
With New Age Armenia–Sedrakian and Hambartsumian set an impressive precedent–which marks the beginning of their future endeavors. Available on CD at your local Armenian music or book store–or contact PE-KO Records (818) 240-8888. Soon to be available at www.pekorecords.com
