YEREVAN—Republican Party of Armenia member Samvel Nikoyan was elected the new Speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly Tuesday.
Nikoyan received 106 votes while the Heritage Party candidate, Larisa Alaverdyan received four votes.
After being elected, the new Parliament Speaker thanked his colleagues and added that he would be guided by the principles of cooperation between the opposition represented in parliament and the political majority.
Last month, the former parliament speaker Hovik Abrahamyan resigned his post to become the leader of the Republican Party’s election campaign ahead of the 2012 parliamentary elections.
On a related matter, Karen Karapetyan, the former mayor of Yerevan, who also resigned last month, was appointed first Vice-President of Gazprombank. The information was confirmed by representative of the Press Service of ArmRosGazprom Shushan Sardaryan.
Gazprombank is the largest Russian non-state owned bank, which is among the three largest banks in Russia. It is a joint stock bank founded in 1990. The bank is owned by the Russian gas company Gazprom, which controls 62.59% of shares directly and also retains shares through its subsidiaries.
