GLENDALE–The 70th anniversary of Hamazkayin’s Nishan Palandjian Jemaran was held at Ambrosia Restaurant–November 10. The banquet was organized by the Alumni Association’s Los Angeles chapter and was attended by close to 300 graduates and faculty of the school.
In his opening remarks–chairman of the Alumni Association Dr. Babian noted the important role Jemaran has played in the Diaspora throughout its existence. The efforts and visions of Levon Shant and Nigol Aghpalian–the founders of the institution–were also taken into account. The various benefactors were thanked–most notably–Dr. Vartan Grigorian–President of the Carnegie Foundation of New York–who was personally responsible in securing the generous donation of $25,000 by the Paul Getty Foundation. Dr Sahag Baghdassarian was also acknowledged for his role in making the Getty donation a reality. Alakyaz–aka Hovhannes Manougian–was another benefactor who was praised for his $10,000 contribution which will serve to expand the existing office of Hamazkayin in Lebanon and realize the publication of Dr. Keghart’s book "Agos–Hoontskuh yev Huntsvorneruh."
Members of the graduating classes of Jemaran’s first decade were honored along with seventeen faculty members who had taught at the school for more than five years. Present at the banquet were five graduates–Karnig Topalian–Kourken Khanjian–Dr Yeghig Konyalian–Haroutioun Balian–and Hagop Torikian–who were all given special recognition.
The total amount raised for Jemaran in the past six months by the laborious efforts of the Alumni Association–reached $50,000.
