WASHINGTON–The National Organization of Republican Armenia’s Board members discussed avenues for expanded cooperation with the Republican National Committee (RNC) at the RNC Winter meeting held from January 21 to 23 in Washington.
The NORA delegation discussed a number of strategies for the upcoming 2000 elections with newly re-elected RNC Chairman Jim Nicholson–Coalitions Director Robert George and Director of Political Education Rob Engstrom during a series of meetings–luncheons and receptions.
NORA also participated in the RNC New Majority Council session where panelists discussed the importance of grassroots outreach and the engagement of minority and ethnic groups in advancing party ideals such as quality education–safe communities–and low taxes. The New Majority Council–headed by Co-Director Stuart DeVeaux–is the Republican Party’s minority and ethnic outreach program.
"The RNC Winter meeting provided a unique opportunity for the Republican party and ethnic communities to identify shared values and better understand key priorities," stated NORA Chairwoman Melanie Kerneklian. "We look forward to working closely with the RNC during the upcoming months to develop innovative strategies for the year 2000."
The Winter Meeting is one of two semi-annual meetings conducted by the RNC. These deliberative sessions address current issues of concern such as the 2000 Census–redistricting–coalitions-building and minority and ethnic outreach. The main objective of this meeting was the election of the RNC Chair and Co-Chair positions. NORA is pleased to announce that the meeting re-elected Jim Nicholson as Chair and Patricia Harrison as Co-Chair. The RNC Summer Meeting will be held in Philadelphia.
NORA was represented by Board Members Ara Bedrosian (Southern California)–Melanie Kerneklian (Virginia)–Steve Samuelian (Central California)–and Aram Sarafian (North Carolina)–as well as Membership Director Karine Alemian (Virginia). Board member Bob Semonian of Massachusetts represented NORA at the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) meetings also held at the same time near Washington.
