YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Competitions for the title of the best outpost commander began in the training base of the Artashat border detachment on Tuesday. Two outpost commanders who won in the qualifying stage in the Gyumri–Hoktemberian–Artashat and Meghri border detachmen’s of the operative group of the Federal Border Service of Russia are competing for the title. The participants are required to show their skills and knowledge related to operations in the borders in practice–including identification and apprehension of presumed trespassers–general physical training–stamina–marshaling of arms–etc.
The competitions will end on Wednesday. According to preliminary data–Petr Vakulenko–a commander of one of the Gyumri outposts–is in the lead.
The winner will be promoted. After a special test of military-technical and theoretical knowledge–the top three will be presented with television sets from the sponsor of the competitions–the Hrazdan Complex CJSC.
According to Major-General Vyacheslav Aboimov–the chief of the operative group of the Federal Border Service of Russia in Armenia–who came to Artashat to compete–said that it is the first time that such a competition was held–within the framework of the combat training programs of the operative group.
High-ranking military officials of Armenia’s border observed the competitions. Armenian frontier-guards are also expected to take part in similar competitions next year. Aboimov said that the frontier-guards of the two countries have always had and will have friendly relations and readiness to help each other. He also said that the reserve outpost of the operative group is currently in the South Caucasus participating in military operations in Chechnya and helping border troops in the vicinity of the Pankisi gorge.
