YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Beginning next year, only Armenian citizens will be called up to protect Armenia’s borders with Turkey and Iran, General Sergey Bodarev, chief of the Russian border guard contingent in Armenia’said Thursday during a press conference where he evaluated the border guard’s achievemen’s this year.
Bodarev said that Russia provides 72 percent of the funds required for the Russian border guard contingent patrolling Armenia’s borders with Turkey and Iran. Russia also provided Armenia with 45 vehicles to bolster the country’s border security, he added.
The Russian government provided 11 million rubles to build two kindergartens for officers’ children in Gyumri and Artashat, he said.
As a positive achievement he added that no attempts to smuggle cattle from Armenia to Turkey have been registered in the last 3 years.
But 25 cases of border violations were registered this year involving 205 people. This is 2 more than in 2006.
