Parliament Ad Hoc Commission to Investigate Elections Fraud

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The Armenian parliament’s agenda includes a decision on setting up an ad hoc commission for making inquiries into the election fraud and breaches of law during the 1995 parliamentary and 1996 presidential elections.

The decision was earlier approved by the parliament’s committee on state and legal issues–which said inquiries must be made into all elections fraud reported in 1991-1999.

The chairman of the committee Victor Dalakian said this will allow the committee to form a complete picture about the volumes and mechanisms of the fraud to make relevant conclusions–which will be instrumental in improving the current Electoral Code.

Victor Dalakian said that the parliament will also consider a draft law on making changes to Armenia’s Criminal Code. The expected changes mainly refer to minor offenses–such as acts of hooliganism–road accidents–thefts and issues concerning military conscription. The changes are supposed to soften punishment limits.

Dalakian said the approval of the law may result in the pardoning of a total of 1,000 convicts–accused of minor offenses.
