YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Khosrov Haroutiunian participated June 12-13 in the work of the forum of chairmen and speakers of the European parliamentary assemblies. The topic of the forum was "Problems emerging before national parliamen’s in the conditions of an expanding democratic Europe."
In his speech Haroutiunian addressed the problems the Armenian parliament is faced with on the way to becoming a member of the Council of Europe–the advisor to the National Assembly speaker–Vigen Sargssian reported at his news conference Monday. Haroutiunian pointed out that the Armenian parliament takes into serious consideration all the processes Armenia’should go through to become a member of the Council of Europe. Haroutiunian also pointed out that Armenia follows with great attention all the proposals of observers and representatives of the Council of Europe that regard Armenia.
"We are sending most important bills to the European institutes for examination and involving renowned experts in the implementation of key programs. We are denying rumors circulating in the public that the delay in Armenia’s induction into the Council of Europe is a means of exerting pressure on Armenia. It would contradict the atmosphere of constructive dialogue in these halls," the National Assembly speaker said.
