YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–On September 26–referring to the head of the presidential press service–the "Liberty" radio reported that Armenia agreed to provide its air space to the US for air attacks against Afghanistan. Leader of the Unity faction Galust Sahakian stressed that it all depends on the final goal. "If it is struggle against terrorism that is in question–Armenia must participate–but if by waging this struggle we stir up a new wave of terrorism – one that will endanger civilians – I consider it unacceptable."
According to Head of the ARF parliamentary faction Aghvan Vardanian–besides participating in the struggle against international terrorism–by making this step Armenia will solve the problem of its economic development. He said that the country that had problems as a result of blockade must have guarantees of security on air transportation.
According to the representative of the CPA faction Gagik Tadevossian–"All the states must be at the front of united struggle against terrorism," but the communists are concerned over the US’s satisfying its "desires as superpower."We believe the policy of `brandishing a club’ to be dangerous–and the consequences of mass attacks are unknown. The CPA believes that Armenia’should refrain from providing its air space–as being surrounded by Muslim countries–it must not be actively involved in the struggle of "the superpowers." As for the struggle against international terrorism–Armenia can cooperate "in a more modest manner."
Welcoming the Armenian authorities’ step–Head of the Agro-Industrial National Unity deputy group Hamayak Hovhannissian pointed out the importance of the anti-terrorist activities being balanced and aimed against terrorist. He strongly believes that providing air space cannot pose a threat–as thus the country is not directly involved in the conflict. "Rather–providing air space is a way of moral and political support," the deputy said.
