PASADENA (AP)–Pasadena police Chief Bernard Melekian has announced his retirement so he can take a job heading a U.S. Department of Justice office.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced Monday that Melekian will become director of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, also known as COPS, which dispenses grants to state and local police agencies to hire and train officers and deploy new technologies and policing strategies.
Before becoming Pasadena chief in 1996, Melekian was with the Santa Monica Police Department for 23 years, where he was awarded the Medal of Valor in 1978 and a Medal of Courage in 1980.
