Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev attend a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States in Ashgabat on Oct. 11

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Friday traded jabs and sparred over Karekin Njdeh during a summit of CIS leaders in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan where Pashinyan told Aliyev to become acquainted with history after the Azeri leader accused Armenia of “glorifying fascists” in reference to Njdeh, whom he claimed to be a Nazi collaborator.

Aliyev sparked the verbal altercation during the CIS summit taking issue with Njdeh statue and citing it as an example of Armenia’s glorification of fascists. Pashinyan was quick to declare that Aliyev was distorting history of Armenia and urged him to study it more carefully.

“Ilham Heydarovich’s speech leaves one with a sense that [Adolf] Hitler played a secondary role and that the Nazi movement was led by Karekin Njdeh,” Pashinyan said, according to Azatutyun.am. “Yet the truth is that KareKin Njdeh fought against Turkish occupation of Armenia, against the genocide of Armenians and … also commanded, together with many Russian officers, a very important section of the frontline during the Armenian-Turkish war in 1918.”

In his remarks, Pashinyan portrayed Njdeh as a victim of Stalin’s political repressions. “Njdeh died in the Vladimir prison [in 1955,]” he said. “Many prominent Soviet figures died in the Vladimir prison and [writer Aleksandr] Solzhenitsyn was in the Gulag. Do we consider everyone imprisoned from 1937 through the 1950s political prisoners?”

“I think it’s inappropriate to use this [CIS] format for distorting history and adding some tension to the atmosphere of this important meeting,” added Pashinyan.

This spat didn’t deter the two leaders from holding a two-hour discussion later at a dinner hosted by Turkmenistan’s President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov for the summit participants.

Pashinyan’s spokesman, Vladimir Karapetian, told the Armenpress news agency that the two men discussed the Karabakh conflict and, in particular, “possibilities of reducing tensions” and “upcoming steps” in the negotiating process mediated by the United States, Russia and France. The conversation lasted for about two hours, said Karapetyan.

Pashinyan’s response was not sufficient or appropriate. He should not have even responded to Aliyev’s ridiculous statements. What Pashinyan should have done is reminded Aliyev that his country Azerbaijan, which honors and glorifies axe-murderers such as Ramil Safarov, has zero credibility to talk about or accuse anyone of “glorifying fascists”.

    Dear Nikol:
Azerbaijan is a fake country created only in 1918.
    It is not ancient.
That is why it destroys monuments and cemeteries that show that Azerbaijan is largely a fiction.
Please say these things publicly and bring down Aliyev.

if Nzhdeh didn’t protect Armenians(and let the Turks and Azeris kill them) in Syunik and other parts of Armenia, then there would be lot less Armenians fighting fascism in WW2, in case if Aliev is so concerned about fascism. There were 600,000 Armenians from Armenia fighting in WW2 and 90,000 from Artsakh. Half of those din’t come back from war, and God knows what was the condition of those that came back. When is Asbarez going to write an article about Armenians participating in WW1 and WW2 and giving so much casualties at very high number. Why were Armenians(in 100’s of thousands) fighting in Europe in WW1 and not in Armenia, why is such a high number of participation by Armenians in WW2 comapere to other Soviet republics. When I was talking to a person(that person’s articles appear on Asbares from time to time) that publishes articles on Asbarez about this issue and gave that person some articles from other sources, that person was surprised that Armenia had such a high participation rate. Please write and educate us on our history(unfortunately our enemies and frenemies know a lot more about our history than we do). Can you imagine what would be the population of Artsakh if Artsakh didn’t have 45,000 dead in WW2. Our frenemies get our soldiers and our enemies get the our land and it’s been happening for almost 1,500-1,600 years

We need a multi tiered “repopulation program”. Weneed to have programs that attracts Armenian youth from overseas to Armenia. We need a program of long term medical care and facility care for the Overseas elderly. The American retirement and elderly care funds are very generous by Armenian standards. For example if just 50,000 elderly requiring care, were to retire in Armenia, and use their US medical retirement benefits , it would bring in $ 1,200,000,000 cash flow to on a yearly basis. That is figuring on a $2000 per month benefit package per person.

Trust the Azeri despot NEVER! Turks have no friends and never will. He rapes his own people with impunity. What do you think he has in mind for Armenians? Unfortunately our ancient homeland is surrounded by Asian invading Turks and therefore we must be forever vigilant. Keep building the Army to the teeth. Indoctrinate diaspora army units. Most important: Unite as one Armenia, Artsakh and diaspora..There is no alternative..

The unity is already there. Not yet officially, but what is important is for the Armenian people to benefit from each political move. Two states voting at the UN is far more effective than one.

wasting time and energy to answer stupid ozeri questions.
I think those ozeries have the experience of using absurdity to mislead their opponent into nowhere and then impose their point of view.

    Mr. Pashinyan
You did not answer and shut this corrupt oilman’s mouth rightfully.
This corrupt oilman planning for his future relationship with Israeli corrupt military outlets, who are supplying military hardware for his corrupt demoralize army.

Jewish people are not that stupid and brainwashed like Turkic herds, most of them know the suffering of the Armenian nation in the hand of Turkey, who was out of the picture during the 2-nd world war waiting for Hitler’s triumph in the Caucasus and join them.

From 200 million Turkic herds only one person registered in Yad Vashem memorial. Armenian with less population spread all over the world after Genocide, with 24, including entire Charles Aznavour’s family!

80,000 azeri turks served in the Germany army and also 1000 were in the SS, thats what Nikol should have said.
Dro led the 13000 Armenian legion all ex soviet POW’s
Of the 80,000 azeris, over 50,000 were volunteers along with another 40000 Turks from Turkey.

I like to remind the Jews that when the Jewish men fighting in the Warsaw Geto uprising were defeated, the Nazi mop up crew went from block to block bayoneting the survivors. Wounded men, women, children, the elderly, were all bayonetted by the Azery SS volunteers.
