STOCKHOLM (ArmRadio)–A petition, signed by 60 of the worlds leading experts on Holocaust and Genocide Studies was submitted to the Swedish Parliament Tuesday urging it to vote in favor of a resolution set to be debated Wednesday.
The petition, which was published in 10 different languages, was submitted to members of the parliament’s Foreign Affairs Commission Tuesday.
Began by the Union of Armenian Associations in Sweden Chairman Vahagn Avedian, the petition called upon the Swedish government to reject Turkish pressure and recognize the Armenian Genocide.
"Today, Sweden is internationally regarded as a champion of human rights, the petition said. It called on the Swedish authorities to live up to the country’s reputation by refusing Turkish denial.
"The Swedish Government should attempt to assist Turkey to become a better democracy by facing its history and acknowledging the truth, not by continuing to stagger in the darkness of self-deception and pretense," it read.
"Today, the data and information about the Genocide of Armenia’s, Assyrians and Pontic Greeks is so extensive that no serious politician can honestly cite insufficient or inconclusive research as an excuse to avoid recognition," the petition continued.
The document said that any refusal to recognize an established fact, based on qualitative and quantitative research, is tantamount to denial.
The Swedish Parliament is scheduled to vote on the issue Wednesday.
Swedish people deserve to be their own people and culture. Don”t let it die out.
