NICOSIA–Long-time priest Very Rev. Vazken Sandrouni of the Cyprus Prelacy–donated $100,000 to the Cilician Catholicosate.
Last month–His Holiness Aram I–Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia hosted a reception honoring Sandrouni by presenting him with a special blessing.
In his remarks–Aram I praised Sandrouni’s contribution to the Armenian church–specifically highlighting his role in Cypriot-Armenian community–where he has been one of the prominent members of the religious community.
The Very Rev. was born Stepan Sandrouni in 1922 in Greece to parents of refugees escaping the Armenian Genocide. In 1924 he and his family relocate to Cyprus–where Sandrouni attended Armenian schools. In 1936 he attended the Jerusalem Seminary–and was ordained a deacon in 1941.
He was ordained a priest in 1955 and has served as pastor and locum tenens of the Prelacy since then.
Sandrouni led efforts in 1963 to reconstruct the Armenian church and Prelacy–when during political unrest in Cyprus the Armenian church was confiscated.
His pleas to then Cypriot president Archbishop Makkarios–provided enough funding for the building of a new church for the Cypriot-Armenian community.
