A new play by D. Tucker Smith
at the Open Fist Theatre
Performances begin July 13, 2011
Quake, a new play by acclaimed playwright D. Tucker Smith opens this weekend at the Open Fist Theatre Company in Hollywood. Set in the summer of 2005, Quake tells the story of Artie Erlich, a Jewish businessman struggling to stay afloat at work and at home after his wife’s death on 9/11, and Marena, an Armenian immigrant who lost everything in the Spitak earthquake in 1988. When Artie and Marena meet, is it the beginning of finding solid ground or will the tremors in their lives only grow stronger? When the lights go out, how they handle the dark will make all the difference.
When asked about the inspiration to write this play, Smith says: “I’ve always been intrigued by how survivors of trauma experience the vestiges of the event, how some move on and others get mired. Since 9/11, Katrina, two wars and an economic crisis, I believe we are experiencing our own quake and I wanted to write a play that captured that and perhaps, in its small way, said something about human resiliency.”
The cast includes Ray Abruzzo (The Sopranos, Mauritius), Marc Aden Gray (Proof, Of Mice and Men), and Open Fist Theatre Ensemble members Charlotte Chanler, Allison Mattox, Alex Pierce, Maxie Solters, and Stephanie Terronez. Tickets are available at Open Fist Web site.
