YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)"A bill on the refugee status widely discussed by Armenia’s public organizations has not yet been submitted to the National Assembly for consideration," said chairman of the Sakharov’s Fund for Progress–Levon Nersessian.
A coordinating council of Armenia’s public organizations attending to refugees will not endorse the bill. In a statement addressed to National Assembly Chairman Babken Ararktsian–the Council refers to a number of international documen’s such as the 1951 Convention on Refugees and the 1967 Protocol– as well as to the Constitution of Armenia and the Armenian law on citizenship and says that the devised bill does not meet the provisions of the above documen’s.
The bill is said to leave out refugees’ interests such as the right to labor–education and housing. The statement was signed by a number of major public organizations in Armenia–including Sakharov’s Fund for Progress–Human Rights Protection and Mercy–the Armenian Sociological Association–the Armenian Republican Women’s Council–"Erjanik" Children’s Charity organization–"Refugees Headquarters" and "Hayrenik Hayots."
