MOSCOW (News.am)—Russian energy giant Gazprom intends to purchase as much of natural gas from Azerbaijan as it can supply, said the Chairman of the company’s Management Committee Alexey Miller at a news briefing on Monday.
According to an October 2009 contract signed between Gazprom and Azeri state energy company SOCAR, there is no maximum set for how much gas the Russian company can purchase from Azerbaijan. “We will buy as much of Azerbaijani gas quantity as they can supply, and none of our agreements prevent us from doing so, which underlines the level of our partnership,” Miller said.
The SOCAR-Gazprom contract will allow the Russian company to purchase gas from Azerbaijan until 2014. It had initially stipulated that Gazprom must purchase a minimum of 500 million cubic meters of gas, but that was later doubled by SOCAR to 1 billion cubic meters.
