GLENDALE–Representatives of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Western US Central Committee met Monday with the leader of the Russian-Armenian Association Ara Abrahamian at the Peschekerian Center–the headquarters of the ARF Central Committee.
Welcoming Abrahamian to Glendale were the chairman of the ARF Central Committee Viken Yacoubian and CC member Vahe Bozoian–as well as the editor of the Armenian section of Asbarez Vatche Proodian and the English Editor of the newspaper and director of Horizon Television Ara Khachatourian.
During the meeting–Abrahamian discussed the state of the Armenian community in Russia–which included updates on the communities in Moscow–St. Petersburg–Krasnodar and elsewhere. He delineated the activities of the organization–which pertain to educational and political empowering of the community–stressing–however–that certain difficulties occur in the absence of traditional Diasporan experiences.
Abrahamian emphasized that his organization is working hard in strengthening economic ties between Russia and Armenia. He also added that due to the efforts of the organization–Armenian nationals that work in Russia have become exempt from registering or applying for Russian residency. This–he explained provides a broader opportunity for individuals to repatriate to Armenia–a project the organization sponsors on a regular basis.
Abrahamian also detailed political activities undertaken by the organization within the highest circles of the Russian government–explaining that the purpose of those ties is to address issues of mutual interest to both Russia and Armenia. He also stressed the importance of rallying behind and uniting around the aspirations of the Armenian people.
The ARF representative expressed that there were various issues that could serve as a common denominator for all Armenia’s to come together–stressing the imperative for practical steps toward that end. Also highlighted were the similarities in political aims in Russia and the US and local issues–which set them apart.
