MOSCOW (Noyan Tapan)–The Association of Russian-Armenia’s issued a statement Monday–expressing its opposition to the creation of the so-called Turkish-Armenian Reconciliation Commission. Below is the translated text of that statement.
The creation of the "Turkish-Armenian Reconciliation Commission" is an unusual phenomenon–the purpose of which must not be judged purely on emotions. It took some time to comprehend and assess the positions and standpoints of the commission. The Association of Russian Armenia’s has a clear position on this issue: We are in favor of civilized methods in dealing with historical issues–which consequently mean the indisputable recognition of the Armenian Genocide–the resolution of the crime within the framework of international law–as well as the creation of principled neighborly relations between Turkey and Armenia.
We do not oppose any kind of good will efforts made at any level that serve the successful fruition of the aforementioned aims and goals. However–unfortunately–it is apparent that political games by Turkey forces supporting it continue–which aim to counter the process of the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide. ARA believes that there can be no concession on the validity of the Armenian Genocide–and Turkey’s direct responsibility in that crime. This issue must never be politically disputed. Furthermore–since the fact that the crime has been recognized to have been committed by the Turkish authorities at the time that it was being committed–becomes another indisputable reality in the matter.
The methods by which the commission was created by persons making covert agreemen’s–who–based on their own pronouncement–are represented within the commission as "individuals," is cause for grave concern to the Association of Russian-Armenia’s. The Turkish side is represented by individuals who are ardent advocates of the Turkey’s state policies and their radical approaches have been articulated on numerous fronts. The situation is completely different in regard to the Armenian members of the commission.
To oppose addressing the consequences of the crime is tantamount to Genocide–which–evidently is being continued. Armenia’s are denied the right to return to their homeland. Armenian historical monumen’s are systematically being destroyed. Armenian history is being altered. Azerbaijan–the "younger brother" of Turkey–is being encouraged to foster exaggerated claims vis–vis the territory of Armenia.
All the Armenia’s around the world–from Armenia–Diaspora and Artsakh–must participate in the creation of a single position referring to this urgent issue. Only human rights and justice will create a foundation for newer and better relations–but not violence and lies.
The statement was signed by the ARA Chairman Ara Abrahamian.
