TEPANAKERT (ArmRadio)—The President of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Bako Sahakian, met Monday with His Holiness Catholicos Karekin II, who was in Karabakh taking part in celebrations dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the reopening of the Artsakh Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
The two discussed a “wide range of issues,” including relations between church and state, the socio-economic situation of the Karabakh republic and the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, according to Sahakian’s press office.
Sahakian said the meeting would “contribute to the development of spiritual life in our republic.” He also reiterated official Stepanakert’s position that the “independence and security of Karabakh could not be matters of discussion” and that his government continues to seek the reinstatement of the republic as a full-fledged party in the negotiations process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of deepening state-church interrelations and the implementation of important religious events in Artsakh.
