BURSA, Turkey—Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian arrived in the Turkish city of Bursa on Wednesday ahead of the Turkey-Armenia soccer match and during a meeting with Turkish leaders he said he was not asking the Diaspora’s permission about the protocols but rather telling them of a government decision.
“I have not tried to inform people in order to receive permission from the Armenian Diaspora. I wanted to convey a decision of the Armenian Government to the Diaspora and held meetings to update them,” said Sarkisian as reported by the Anadolu News Agency.
“There could be individuals with different thoughts in both countries. What is important is to see that the number of the people thinking positively about our steps in the majority,” added Sarkisian, according to Anadolu.
In his remarks, Sarkisian said the protocols were a crucial step, adding that he had experienced difficulty while trying to inform certain circles about the process.
During a meeting of both countries’ delegations, Turkish President Abdullah Gul declared “We are not writing history, we are making history,” adding that making history cannot take place in a single day.
“This is a process. We have witnessed together that we can solve the difficult problems within this process,” added Gul.
Sarkisian and Gul are due to attend a return match of their countries’ national soccer teams, which was scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. Pacific Time.
Sarkisian, accompanied by Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian and other Armenian officials, arrived at Bursa airport late in the afternoon. He was greeted there by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu in an official ceremony broadcast live by Armenian and Turkish television. Sarkisian smiled as he watched a brief performance by Turkish folk dancers.
The two presidents were to have dinner before heading to Bursa’s Ataturk Stadium. Gul will give a reception in honor of his Armenian counterpart after the match. It was not clear if they will make public statements after the talks as they did in Yerevan last year. A statement issued by Sarkisian’s office earlier in the day said the president will first visit Armenia players and coaching staff to “encourage” them ahead of the politically charged game.
Turkish authorities mounted tight security measures in and around the stadium hours before the match. Turkish media has reported that thousands of uniformed and plainclothes security personnel will be deployed there to avoid possible provocations. Fans will only be allowed to carry Turkish and Armenian flags. Turkish officials have banned fans from chanting political slogans and displaying Azerbaijani flags at the match.
Ticket sales have been restricted, with most distributed to students of military academies, police and their families, according to media reports. President Gul has met with leaders of fans groups to personally ask them not to overshadow the game and return the “hospitality” with which he himself was greeted in Yerevan.
AFP news agency reported that in a gesture to their Armenian guests, the Turkish fans were expected to greet them in the stadium by singing a folk song about a blonde lover, which is popular in both Turkey and Armenia.
To the editors of Asbarez:
Have you seen the following article? Is it true:
“Turkish diaspora in United States refused the offer of Armenian diaspora organizations in United States who supports signing of the protocols, when they called Turkish diaspora to help against Armenians in America who protest against the protocols. Chairman of Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) Gunay Evinch refused the offer stating that it is ’interior problem’ of Armenian diaspora. … Evinch wrote that Armenian organizations asked for participation of ATAA to the demonstrations of Armenian organizations towards paying support tothe policies of Serzh Sarksyan.”

Ok Mr. Salkisian, If you think in that way, do you prefer that we don`t send money anymore ? Remember that we are armenians too, our granparent had to leave or had die in 1915 !!!
The above post by Stepan is interesting but shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. We know very well that certain Armenian organizations have maintained ties with the ATAA in the past.
Here is a picture of Van Krikorian (a board member of the Armenian Assembly of America) speaking at an ATAA banquet a few years back:

Not surprising but, nevertheless, despicable.
There is a total misunderstanding; we are dealing with a chess game named “Cold War”; there are just two players and it started after WW II, it looks like those two players want to stop playing to bring some order to their Homes, the rest is just dressings and decorations; forget about Armenian/Turkish FMs forget about Gule/Erdoghan & Sarkissian they are just characters on that chess board.
Putin by smashing Georgia’s aggression in the South Ossetia disturbed the flow of the Baku oil to EU; Bush by not intervening sent the second powerful message on behalf of Russia to Aliyev family for getting in bed with western oil companies, the first one was when USSR collapsed and Russia was in disarray; some of its former republics including Armenia and Azerbaijan started flirting with West; at that time the senior Aliyev (Heydar) was in power started negotiating with western oil companies.
In Armenian side the first president LTP came to LA, picked up Raffi Hovannisian as his FM, then got involved in a losing war with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Gharabagh, next year the young FM of Armenia having the “Armenian Genocide” on his agenda which was against Turkey a strong US ally, got fired for expressing those ideas, which it makes it easy to understand where the order came from.
The Victorious Azerbaijan army was pushing towards Gharabagh; mean while Aliyev (The father) was signing deals with W. oil companies; when, Gharabagh’s Armenian leaders (most probably headed by R. Kocharian) contacted Russians, hibernated Russia woke up, the guns turned around facing Azeri side; they got pushed back, Arthakh and more lands were liberated, LTP was toppled, that brought Kocharian to power, and peace and tranquility to Armenia and to the region in general.
When Georgia learned its lesson Aliyev (the son) started kissing Putin’s boots offering him part of the Caspian oil but Putin refused , those events also angered Bush and he threatened to deploy a new missile system in Eastern Europe in another word he refueled the cold war.
Then there was another attempt in Armenia, AKA March 1st disaster, where LTP failed and the second man in command of Gharabagh war took power in Armenia.
After that failed attempt; on August 1st 2008 Marie L. Yovanovitch was appointed as US Ambassador, I think she was the one who started whispering the “Protocol” and “Soccer Diplomacy” in Sarkissian’s ears, there was just one big obstacle on the way of this plan and that was the mad Russia, but when President Obama took power, announced his peace plan with all US enemies, then sent Clinton and offered to cancel Bush’s missile deployment plan; he succeeded; that broke the Ice and Putin lowered his guards, and “OPENED HIS FIST” as Obama wanted.
The rest of the names and claims here and there are just blowing on the wind my friends.
To my knowledge the only legal way that Armenia can drag itself out of this big hole is to UNITE and WITHOUT ANNOUNCING ANY NEW PRESIDENT(S) Get out to streets and peacefully, that is without any violence raise their voices until the Armenian Parliament burns this So-Called “Protocol” in public, and it would be up to President Sarkissian to accept and stay or to step down.
This article is unacceptable! How dare Mr. President think that he doesn’t need “permission” from the Armenian diaspora.. We are Armenians after all and we were forced to leave our homeland due to the genocide. It has not been pleasant in the least for the last 2 generations of armenians to immigrate to foreign lands and adapt to different culures, lifestyles, ways of thinking.. It has been so hard for so many of us, battling with our identity, trying desperately to instill armenian roots in other people’s countries. We have fought so hard to build churches and schools in order to keep our heritage alive. To neglect everything, to change history without the consent of the armenian people is completely unfair. I wonder how Mr. President would feel if he lived through what every diasporan armenian lived through. We don’t have a say in signing away our ancestors history. This fake diplomacy between the 2 countries is quite sickening. I am ashamed as an Armenian to have a president who can attend a soccer match to celebrate the signing of the protocols and then break bread with “the enemy”. It’s such a sad time for Armenians but we will continue the fight, the fight for our rights, the fight for our freedom and the fight for a united Armenia.

You guys published a quote as “reported by the Anadolu News Agency”. Shame on you for not verifying your sources and trusting the Turkish media to put out such an unverified claim that may and will further divide our nation. Shame on Asbarez. 10:0 to Turkey.

Turkish media spread disinformation on President Sargsyan
The Turkish Hurriyet spread information referring to the CNNTurk, as if the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan told a CNNTurk reporter in Bursa Wednesday that the Pan-Armenian tour mission was not convince the Armenians but rather inform them about the decision taken.
President’s press secretary Samvel Farmanyan commented on this:
“Armenian President had no briefings, made no statements in Turkey. As the chronicle shows, the decision on signing the protocols followed the 6-week public discussions, President’s Pan-Armenian tour and the National Security Council sitting with the abovementioned issue in agenda. Thus, the information spread by the Turkish media is evident disinformation.”

Mr. Sarksyan’s ball is in the Turkish court. Let’s see what decision will Turks make.
What a shame Mr. President.
The history does not need to be reexamined. The Actions of the President were due to the fact that his head and ass are both in a vice. Armenians of the diaspora are worldwide and our opinions matter, not just the opinions of the Armenians living in Armenia.
