Armenian President Armen Sarkissian has asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to mediate the return of Armenian prisoners of war who are currently held in Azerbaijani custody after the war.

In a letter sent to Putin, Sarkissian said that Armenians “and the Diaspora are deeply concerned over the situation around the soldiers and civilians who have appeared in Azerbaijani captivity, and that the Russian President’s mediation would be a great support in the resolution of the extremely delicate issue of returning our troops and civilians, as well as the bodies of those killed, who are currently held by Azerbaijan.”

Azerbaijan has stalled efforts to allow for an accounting of Armenian POWs, which has created an uproar from the families of those missing and unaccounted for since the end of the war.

Sarkissian, who is in Moscow on a private visit, met with the representatives of the Armenian community in Moscow.

Prior to the meeting, President Sarkissian, accompanied by Primate of the Russian Diocese Archbishop Ezras Nersisyan, visited the church, lit a candle in memory of all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Homeland, and talked to those present in the church.
