The Armenian Educational Foundation (AEF) has announced Dr. Yuri Sarkissyan as the recipient of the its Lifetime Achievement Award. President of the State Engineering University of Armenia (SEUA)–formerly known as the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute (YPI)–Dr. Sarkissyan will be recognized at a banquet to be held on September 29–2002 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel in Glendale.
The Armenian Educational Foundation recognizes educators annually for their service and dedication to the education profession and service to students of Armenian descent. This year’s recipient Dr. Sarkissyan is an education professional who has dedicated his life to higher education and the well-being of students within Armenia. Dr. Sarkissyan is the first AEF honoree from the Republic from the of Armenia.
Throughout the past decade–AEF has developed a working relationship with SEUA. Dr. Sarkissyan has won the admiration and respect of AEF members through his partnership with the Foundation and its annual scholarship program. The Foundation gran’s over $18,000 annually to State Engineering University students. Dr. Sarkissyan and his staff have facilitated the process of AEF members actually meeting the students and granting the funds directly to them. Through the University–he has also led an AEF project enabling the printing of textbooks in Armenian through a desktop publishing system. Dr. Sarkissyan and his staff have consistently partnered with institutions in the United States and throughout the world. Because of the integrity of and trust in Dr. Sarkissyan and his staff–universities across the globe reach out to work with the State Engineering University of Armenia.
Dr. Sarkissyan received his Diploma of Mechanical Engineering from Yerevan Polytechnic Institute in 1962. That same year–Dr. Sarkissyan began his professional career at YPI as an assistant professor. He continued his educational career–and received a Ph.D. from the Moscow Institute of Chemical Machinery in 1967. In 1975–he received his Doctor of Sciences and full Professor status from Yerevan Polytechnic Institute. At that time–Dr. Sarkissyan became the Institute’s department chairman and in 1988–became President of the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute. This award coincides with the upcoming celebration of the State Engineering University of Armenia’s 70th Anniversary. With dedication to the University of over forty years–14 of those as President of the University–Dr. Sarkissyan truly deserves this award.
Through his work–Dr. Sarkissyan has touched the lives of thousands of students and continues to touch the lives of SEUA alumni–including Presidents–Prime Ministers–and many other political leaders from Artsakh and Armenia. He has also influenced the work of the entire technical and industrial elite in Armenia.
Dr. Sarkissyan has served as a visiting professor at the University of Illinois–Chicago and at several universities in Great Britain. He has won many academic awards and honors including a NATO Senior Research Fellowship Grant–an NSF Grant for Joint Research at Stanford University–and the award of the International Federation on the Theory of Machines and Mechanisms.
Dr. Sarkissyan was elected a member of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences–serving as its Vice President in 1995. He is also a member of the Armenian Engineering Academy and the International Academy of Engineering. Dr. Sarkissyan is fluent in Armenian–Russian–and English and has a fairly good grasp of French.
During the most crucial times of Armenia’s struggle for independence and the first trying years of the post-Soviet era–1990-1995–Dr. Sarkissyan served as a member of Parliament for the new Republic of Armenia. His dedication to the nation–education–and the sciences is evident in all that he does.
