YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–Leaders of the two competing ruling bodies of the Armenian Democratic League–the Ramkavar Azatakan Party–based in the US and Lebanon told President Robert Kocharian over the weekend that they have "adopted a declaration which marks the beginning of the restoration of the party’s unity," the presidential press service said. "They also stressed a positive role of the Armenian authorities in that matter," it said.
The split within its leadership ran’s was widely attributed to differing attitudes toward the former authorities in Yerevan.
The ADL’s organization in Armenia was also driven by internal bickering earlier this year until Kocharian mediated a reconciliation shortly before the May 31 elections in which the party fared poorly. It failed to clear the five percent vote barrier needed to get into parliament.
ADL leaders were in Yerevan for the first Armenia-Diaspora conference held on September 22-23. One of them–Yervand Azatian from Boston–told RFE/RL on Monday that the reconciliation process is due to be complete by next March with the election of a new party body.
