YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"Most of the complaints made by the Karen Demirchian campaign staff remain unconfirmed–even though relevant inquiries have been made," Scientific-Industrial and Civic Union Acting Chairman Alexander Aghamalian said at a news conference Friday.
Acknowledging the numerous reported violations–Aghamalian still maintained that most of the cases had been exaggerated and triggered by the West–which wants to stop Kocharian from becoming president. For that reason–according to Aghamalian–attempts are being made to sustain mounting tension in the country so as to mislead public opinion regarding the election process–which may jeopardize Kocharian’s future presidency.
The West would like to have a "weak president" in Armenia–easy to pressure–especially over the Karabakh issue–Aghamalian claimed–adding that OSCE observers are also involved in the game.
He maintained that David Shahnazarian–Ashot Bleyan and–to his regret–the leader of such a serious organization as the National Democratic Union–Vazgen Manoukian–are fulfilling the order coming from the West.
Aghamalian highlighted the issue of Armenia’s geopolitical orientation. According to him–most Armenia’s rely on Russia to help Armenia get out of the current crisis. The SICU leader voiced his regret that some believe Demirchian to have a pro-Russian orientation–while it is Robert Kocharian who is obviously oriented toward Russia.
Aghamalian felt that the West endorses Demirchian because the latter does not control the situation in the country and lacks effective mechanisms to settle the Karabakh issue. Thus–Demirchian is very likely to become a true successor of Ter-Petrosyan’s foreign policy–which is in the interest of the West.
