YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Renowned international soccer star Nikita Simonian was awarded a medal for outstanding service by the International Soccer Federation (FIFA)–making him one of only a handful of athletes in the world to be bestowed the honor.
Simonian has received numerous awards–medals and accolades for soccer and sportsmanship–as well as honors from the Soviet Union. In 1956 he became an Olympic champion and in 1958 World Cup championship –he was named the most valuable player of the Soviet Union. That same year–he also won a medal from the International Olympic Committee.
His leadership propelled Yerevan’s Ararat soccer team to Soviet champion status in 1973.
