YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Chairman of the Armenian National Movement and parliament member Vano Siradeghian said during a court session Thursday that according to the August 6–1998 publication of the Armenian Republic–head of the investigations department of the Prosecutor’s Office Aghvan Hovsepian was in Prosecutor General Henrik Khachatrian’s room–when the latter was assassinated. According to Siradeghian–the fact that Hovsepian was "at leas a witness" in the case was used as a method of blackmail "to direct the case in a desired way."
In response to Siradeghian’s proposal–prosecutor Zelim Tadevossian said that the day following the publication–the newspaper placed a refutal. The refutal indicated the time when Hovsepian entered Khachatrian’s room and the time when he left it. The prosecutor said he was ready to produce the newspaper at the next court session.
The victims in the case–brother of chairman of the Ashtarak Executive Committee Hovhanes Sukiassian–Haroutiun Sukiassian–father of Karen Rafaelian–Masis Rafaelian–and Kim Balayan demanded to ensure equality of all defendants and arrest Vano Siradeghian–since–according to them–he together with his associates keeps the victims and witnesses who testify against him in an atmosphere of fear and threats. "Vano Siradeghian is free and very dangerous–but we do not have any guarantees that we will be defended," they said.
The court did not consider the petition since it could not check the circumstances connected with threats and decided to send it to the Prosecutor General. If the Prosecutor General sends a petition to the National Assembly–and the parliament gives its consent to Siradeghian’s detention–the court will consider the petition.
Despite bad health condition–Vahan Haroutiunian turned up in the court for the purpose of "avoiding scandals," as he said. However–after consulting his defense attorney–he asked the court to postpone the court session.
The court sustained his petition and postponed the hearing.
