YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Speaker of Armenian National Assembly Armen Khachatrian welcomed the ambassador of Israel to Armenia Rivka Kohen on Thursday. According to NA’s press office–the newly appointed ambassador stated that she is very proud of having the honor to represent Israel in Armenia. She said that before coming to Armenia’she had meetings with Israeli Armenia’s but even learning a few things about Armenia–she thinks that there is much to be learned. "I have come here to cooperate and I think that the relations between our countries will become closer with the help of my efforts," added Kohen.
Referring to the struggle against international terrorism–she stressed that at the present moment her country is facing hard times–but there is a hope that it will be possible to come to an agreement and peace through negotiations. The ambassador also said that despite the fact that her country’s government accuses Yaser Arafat for continuing terrorist acts–Israel dreams about peace and–aiming to realize step by step Mitchel’s program after a cease fire–considers the leader of Palestine as a partner. She also expressed the readiness of Israel to participate in the economic programs of Armenia–stating that during the next meetings she will present certain programs having to do with agriculture–environment and health preservation.
The Speaker of the National Assembly Armen Khachatrian–wished the new ambassador good luck and expressed his hopes for active cooperation between the two nations. He also stressed that Armenia is against terrorism and considers it as an enemy of civil society. He also stated that Armenia adheres to peaceful settlement of the conflicts. Khachatrian also said that Armenia’s as well as Jews have a strong Diaspora and the cooperation between the two nations can be enlarged to include them as well. Stating a strong scientific inner force of Armenia and possibilities of cooperation–the Speaker expressed his readiness to support the activity of the new ambassador.
