YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The leadership of the Yerevan State University has begun a massive on-campus campaign to decrease corruption, especially bribery by deans and professors on campus, announced Aram Simonian, the president of the university during a press conference Thursday. Spearheading this effort has been the Social Democratic Hunchakian Party’s Sarkis Dkhruni Student Organization, which for weeks has been conducting surveys of students about corruption on various university campuses. These surveys asked students about the extent of corruption by faculty and urged students to identify–by name–faculty members or deans who have engaged in bribe taking and other corrupt acts. These unanimous surveys also assess faculty performance and address specific cases of corruption. Simonian explained that while the Sarkis Dkhruni surveys place Yerevan State University at the bottom of the institutions with worst corruption, nevertheless, the leadership of the university has taken it upon itself to begin an on-campus campaign. "The campaign against corruption is not only designed to identify faculty members who engage in bribe taking, but also to deter students from offering bribes to students," explained Simonian. He also cited a petition signed by students in the foreign language department of the university urging the leadership to fire world literature professor Artem Harutiunian. Simonian said that university leadership is investigating the matter and if proven, the necessary steps will be taken.
