YEREVAN (ArmRadio)-A deepening of relations between Armenia and the EU will undoubtedly accelerate Armenia’s democratic and economic development, Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian said on Thursday during a meeting with EU representatives.
Sarkisian was meeting to discuss EU-Armenia relations with the heads of the diplomatic missions of various EU member states as well representatives from the European Commission’s delegation to Armenia, the President’s Press Office Reported.
Sarkisian told the representatives that the implementation of Armenia’s European Neighborhood Policy Action plan is a priority for Armenia and is in complete harmony with the Government’s program for reforms.
Armenia is striving to join the European Union’s General System of Preferences in order to receive the status of a market economy, Sarkisian explained, adding that Armenia is looking forward to the day it can sign a free trade agreement with the European Union.
In order to achieve these goals, Sarkisian said the government would be working toward improving the investment climate of the country. The government is also working to improve the business environment and is making fundamental changes in the administration of customs.
Sarkisian also discussed with the European representatives issues related to the building of the EU Regional Center for Cultural Issues.
Moving onto foreign policy issues, Sarkisian reiterated Armenia’s position that the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict must be settled peacefully within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group. He also spoke of Armenia’s continued commitment toward establishing normal relations with Turkey without preconditions.
French Ambassador to Armenia Serzh Smessov spoke on behalf of the ambassadors present at the meeting. He expressed their overall satisfaction with the meetings, as they are very useful for the ambassadors.
The Ambassadors welcomed the determination of the Armenian authorities to fully implement all recommendations of the PACE resolution.
During the meeting the President of Armenia also provided clarifications on other issues raised by the diplomats.
