On October 16, 2010, I did not get to ride on the world’s longest reversible aerial tramway, but I got to strengthen my belief in people who simply want to see Armenia prosper. While the world was fascinated by the operation of the “Wings of Tatev” aerial tramway, I was fascinated with the dedication of those who provided funding for the realization of its operation.
While many were awed at how the 17th century Dzit-han (Oil mill) was restored, I was awed at the birth of the idea to restore it. It is truly amazing how people like you and me, Diasporan Armenians and non-Armenians, gather and decide to donate to the Tatev Revival Project, for the revival of the South of Armenia: A project beyond the scope of our imagination; donations, beyond our lifetime bank accounts.
Over 700 guests comprising of local and international high-ranking officials and businessmen and 70 local and international media representatives attended the grand event in the Syrunik province. In about 5 hours, at whirlwind speed, several small initiatives took place and dozens of messages floated within and outside of the walls of the monastery. On the valley right above the monastery small pavilions had been set up as part of the folk festival. Within the walls of the monastery a large stage had been constructed for the concert, in the place where the crane used to stand.
The kitchen of the monastery was bustling once again and housed the “Cuisine Revival Project”. Guests could taste long-forgotten, yet delicious traditional Armenian dishes and desserts. The women at the baking house baked fresh “lavash” on the spot, in the “tonir”. There was too much going on for one day, but that is truly the scope of the project. October 16 was not solely the day the aerial tramway was launched, but also the day the Tatev Revival Project was officially launched, the day all those who had donated 20 million dollars were thanked and the day funds were gathered for the many components of the project.
As part of its ongoing fundraising efforts, such as the online donation section at www.tatev.am/donate, during the opening ceremony some of the activities were also aimed to this end. In one of the monk cells the “Southern Armenia Ecotourism” pavilion had been set up with breathtaking pictures of several beautiful sites. Another monk cell was used to display and also sell different works of miniature paintings. In other places, books and souvenirs of Tatev were being sold. Adjacent to all the structures within the monastic complex, such as the Poghos-Petros Church, Grigor Tatevatsi’s mausoleum, the Swinging Tower “Gavazan”, etc., posters had been placed explaining their history, current condition and the funds required for their renovation/restoration.
The official opening began with the welcoming speech by Pegor Papazian, the CEO of the National Competitiveness Foundation of Armenia, which is implementing the Tatev Revival Project. After his speech, Garegin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, blessed the “Wings of Tatev” at the Halidzor aerial tramway station, a 40 minute drive away from the monastery. Serzh Sargsyan, the President of Armenia; Garegin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, Bako Sahakyan, the President of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and seven children from the villages surrounding the monastery entered one of the two cabins of the aerial tramway, thus marking the official launch of the aerial tramway. In 11 minutes Mr. Papazian welcomed the guests from the Tatev station and everybody headed down towards the vicinity of the monastery.
Many have never even realized what used to stand next to the monastery. What once used to be a small mound resembling a pile of ruins, today is an interactive museum. The fully-restored oil mill, the Dzit-han tells a 400- year old history. I don’t know if it was the damp smell of the structure, or its beautiful architecture or its 17th century artifacts that left such an inexplicable impression on me, but I can state: I loved the Dzit-han and it alone is worth a visit to Tatev. Before entering the monastery, guests became acquainted with how the Dzit-han used to work and only after that did they enter the territory of the mighty fortress for the festivities. After the prayer s and blessings of the Supreme Patriarch in front of the Boghos-Bedros Church, a very touching and beautifully presented concert began. After the concert the guests once again went outside to partake in the folk festival, with traditional songs and dances.
The Tatev monastic complex is located on top of a hill and is surrounded by beautiful green mountains. Anyone who has visited the region before in this season can guarantee you one thing: mist. However, on October 16, there was nothing but a warm sun and cool breeze throughout the day. In other words, Tatev greeted its guests in all her glory. Almost at the end of the event the wind became stronger and clouds gathered, but no one expected what happened next. Suddenly it began pouring ‘’Hollywood movie” style and this, accompanied by hail. The wind was so strong that it was blowing away everything and throwing the heavier stuff on the ground. The wind managed to overturn a large, full milk churn, probably about 30kg, right in front of my eyes. This all happened in a matter of about 10 minutes, after which the sun come out and, on the horizon over the monastic complex and the aerial tramway, a rainbow appeared.
Never before have I seen a rainbow in such vivid colors. As the old saying goes, “There’s a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow”, and ironically enough on that day Tatev was at the foot of the rainbow. And as if everyone was not astonished enough by the speed and beauty of everything, another rainbow appeared on top of the first one. For the first time in my life I witnessed a double rainbow, which was literally breathtaking. Somehow everyone forgot that they were all wet and just stood there to take in the beautiful sight. I think Mother Nature played a little game to emphasize the already natural beauty of the location and send yet another message: “You can experience the ineffable only in Tatev”. On October 16, 2010, I got to experience many things, but I did not get to ride on the world’s longest reversible aerial tramway. That will have to wait until my next visit.

I was present in Tatev at the aerial tramway inauguration ceremony. This was a huge achievement spearheaded by the National Competitiveness Foundation of Armenia, under the leadership of its capable CEO, Mr. Pegor Papazian, a Diaspora Armenian who immigrated to Armenia with his wife and five children from the United States six years ago. The event was well planned and carried out. The occasional thunderstorms and rain showers did not bother those present. Everyone was filled with national pride and optimism in view of this inspiring manifestation of the new Armenian Renaissance. The “Wings of Tatev” aerial tramway project is a vivid example of how an effective collaboration between the Armenian government and a group of dedicated visionary Armenians from Armenia and the Diaspora can lead to outstanding results benefiting the country and its inhabitants, in this case the citizens of the Syunik Marz. The National Competitiveness Foundation of Armenia (www.cf.am) deserves our moral and financial support to continue the implementation of its various exciting projects.

Congratulations to all that have contributed to this impressive project. Ruben Vartanyan, Pegor Papazian, the Armenian government, the Swiss aerial engineers and the local artisans and workers that have made this project possible. Witnessing the project firsthand on October 12th before the opening and speaking to many local residents and workers on the site, I felt the deep pride and love with which everyone was anticipating its completion. The work has just begun and we in the diaspora and in Armenia have to sustain the effort by engaging with the local residents of Tatev and the vacinity to establish businesses that can sustain the region economically. Once again great job everyone!

The ever unpredictable mountain weather played havoc on the day of the opening of the Tatev aerial tramway
Blue skies and beautiful sunshine allowed President Sarkissian and his Holiness Karekin II to ride the wings of Tatev in tranquility. After the blessings and ceremonial speeches, the skies “opened”; heavy rain, hail and storm followed. The amazing result was once again, beautiful weather, followed by a double rainbow. To me, the weather drama reflected the history of the armenian people, and the different patterns of peace and war that they have confronted. However, the “grand finale”,the double rainbow symbolized the triumph of the Armenians and the peace and prosperity that they yearn for.

With great pride I can say that this aerial cableway was done by a company based in my town, which is indeed very active in Armenia.
With this work, we celebrate again the revamping of an old friendship: the Armenian and the Italian one!
Long life to our Armenian Christian ancestors!

    Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

    Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

    1. Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

    2. Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

    • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.

    • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
    • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
    • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
    • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

    2. Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
    3. Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
    4. Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
    5. Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
    6. Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
    7. Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

    Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers), both for Windows and for MAC users.

    Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs, there may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to
