GLENDALE–The Armenian Educational Foundation is pleased to announce that Ralph and Savey Tufenkian have donated $155,000 towards renovation of Stepankert School #3 in memory of their son–Richard Tufenkian. During Karabakh’s national liberation struggle schools #3 and #4 were damaged by massive bombardment by Azeri forces–and since then–900 Artsakh students have attended the schools under dire conditions. In addition–the Shirvanians and Tufenkians have donated $12,500 each toward the remodeling of an existing building which will house a new teacher training center in Goris–Armenia.
In the year 2000–AEF will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary–and on this occasion–the Board of Directors has embarked on the ambitious goal of repairing up to fifty schools in Artsakh and the border villages of Armenia. To achieve this goal–AEF must seek donations from its members and the community to sponsor one or more schools. The generous donations by the Tufenkians and Shirvanians mark the beginning of this project.
During a recent visit to village schools in Armenia and Artsakh–AEF Board members recognized the desperate need for repairing leaky roofs–damaged floors–broken windows and unsanitary restroom facilities. AEF immediately budgeted $100,000 to renovate seven schools in the Lori Region of Armenia–and five schools in Artsakh. The cost of repairs for each school is between $5,000 and $20,000.
