*US government report finds that Azerbaijan has imported twice as many arms as Armenia over the past five years.
WASHNIGTON–The US government’s Arms Control and Disarmament Agency (ACDA)–in its most recent survey of the international arms trade–documen’s the impact on the military balance in the Caucasus caused by Turkey and Azerbaijan’s ongoing military escalation.
The ACDA report included the following findings on the five year period (1992-96) covered in its study:
*Azerbaijan’s arms imports are nearly two times higher than Armenia’s. (Azerbaijan’s imports are $115,000,000; Armenia’s are $60,000,000)
*Azerbaijan’s arms imports–as a percentage of its total imports–are more than one and a half times greater than Armenia’s. (Azerbaijan’s arms imports are 3 percent of total imports; Armenia’s are 1.8 percent of total imports) Turkey’s arms imports–as a percentage of its total imports–are more than three times higher than Armenia’s.
* (Turkey’s arms imports are 5.9 percent of total imports; Armenia’s are 1.8 percent of total imports)
*Turkey imports over three times more arms from Russia than Armenia. (Turkey’s arms imports from Russia are $190,000,000; Armenia’s are $60,000,000)
* Turkey arms imports are one hundred and forty times greater than Armenia’s. (Turkey’s arms import from Russia are $8,400,000,000; Armenia’s are $60,000,000.)
